History

-when France captures Swiss Confederacy in War of the French Revolution (1792-1804) it divides it up into three republics

-Rhodanic Republic, consisting of Romance bits, and it gets divided between France and new Italian state later

-Helvetian Republic, of more modern bits, as centralized state

-Tellgau, of less modern bits, as old-fashioned federation

-with Second French War (1821-32) there's major rebellion in Helvetic Republic and Tellgau

-French crush it

-also there's a republican revolution in Swabia which France supports

-France ultimately fuses Swiss states and Swabia into one bigger Tellgau

-with constitution copied almost verbatim from France's

-new republic teeters between being dependency of France and virtually independent

-however nationalism rises over later 19th century

-anger at French garrison paid by tax money results in anti-French majority to legislature

-votes to end French alliance

-France refuses and dissolves Tellgau's government, resulting in French Wars > Fourth French War (1880-4)

-culminates in Tellgau admitted into Germany but keeps its constitution almost unamended

-only instead of Grand Elector it has a hereditary Elector, namely the Prince of Thurn and Taxis

-who mostly stays out of the way and lets state rule itself
